Trade Centre Ltd is the REAL problem 2008/02/29 17:36

As someone who has been involved in trade shows across Canada, the problem with shows, concerts, special events, etc is not that of Peter Kelly. As a show promotor, it is my opinion that Trade Centre Ltd management and the politically connected Board members, are inept.
When I started and ran the Atlantic Wood Show for a number of years I had zero problem in dealing with the City. I had zero problem in dealing with the old management at Exhibition Park. However, I encountered a multitude of red tape and problems from almost day one when TCL took over Exhibition Park. I have heard similiar stories from other event promotors. I was even told not to "rock the boat" or I would be blacklisted from our government owned facilities that are run by TCL. As a Nova Scotian I am embarressed that such "leadership" prevails with running events in Metro. I have never had any other such problems in the venues I have held shows in across the country. Not once! Even the company who bought the Atlantic Wood Show from me now run a Wood Show in Moncton, but as of 2007 no longer one in Halifax.
So, for those who want to blame the Commonwealth Games bid, events happening in Moncton, and whatever else on Mr. Kelly, I simply ask you to look at TCL's antics before casting blame. Maybe you forget the fiasco about the Halifax Mooseheads almost left the best venue in town (Metro Centre)for the older, smaller Forum (until the City Manager at the time stepped in). What about failed concerts? The inability to pull of another good concert this year? Perhaps you are not aware of just how difficult it hold an event in Halifax when you are forced to go through TCL. Or maybe you are not aware that Rodney MacDonald broke a written promise into an inquiry regarding the TCL'c management practices. A promise broken after a little lobbying from some high powered Tories. Take a look at some of the political hacks on TCL's Board.
At the end of the day I firmly belive that HRM will not move ahead in the field of special events until the TCL management and Board members are all replaced.
Sincerely, Craig Blois
