Will Kelly's fast ferry sink him? 2007/08/25 13:00 Karma: 0
Bedford's fast ferry to Halifax, fully supported and being pushed by Peter Kelly.

But the idea has problems, not to mention the millions of your dollars it will cost. The cost alone for the two ferries will likely be more than the cost of purchasing of a transit fleet of 50 busses.

Can you imagine the impact of 50 more busses serving Bedford?

Think about that before you put on your life jacket.

What will become of the fast ferry service when the fleet of 2 requires maintenance? How many will the fast ferry serve in dry-dock?

Will you struggle through Bedford's traffic gridlock to ensure your place on the fast ferry to Halifax?

Can you afford up to $10 a day to cover the trip to and from Halifax?

But most of all, consider the huge impact that a fleet of 50 new busses could have as opposed to this silly idea of a fast ferry that will likely draw only a few of Bedford's commuter population.

This sounds like a great thing but that's about the size of it.

Mr. Kelly can talk it up and make it sound like a great thing until you consider the pitfalls.

For one thing, the point was well made about increasing public transit. It would be a fraction of the cost and much more efficient.

I can also recall the mayor saying no spped limit exists in Halifax Harbour. But that was blown to pieces when it became public knowledge that there is a speed limit in Halifax Harbour.

That very small, but HUGELY important detail was missed by Kelly and HRM staff.

What else did they miss?

This is a boat the won't float. Grab a life ring Kelly.

I'm willing to bet that our mayor Kelly will jump ship on the ferry. He'll distance himself from this ferry craziness and say he never did support it. Because that's how the good mayor works.

This ferry is typical of the response from Kelly to all serious issues. Instead of grappling with real solutions that make sense and are doable and affordable, he lets fly with one of these larger than life announcements and thus deflects all conversation and debate from the real problem or issue. The problem is we've bought that program for years and it has gotten us no where. These big schemes of Kellys are now a dog that just won't hunt.

In the parlance of the sea...lets give the mayor and these nutbar schemes the old heave ho and let them sink with him to rest forever more in Davy Jones' Locker....Arrrrr, what say yee Cpt Jack Sparrow.............hmmmmmmmmmmmmm Kelly a pirate?? Depends on your point of view doesn't it.

Didn't he get elected on a promise to institute commuter rail from Bedford? What ever happened to that?

Mayor Doofus must go.

At least commuter rail is a good idea, but it looks like that is never going to happen either.

A commuter rail from the Airport though Sackville, Bedford, Rockingham, the West End, Dal, the south End all the way to Via. Might cost us 1/2 a billion dollars, but its visionary, beneficial to many many folks, not just those in Bedford. It costs less than buses to run, carries way more people at once, doesn't add any vehicles to the road at all whether they are buses or not. But too visionary for this city. And sad.
