Despite the rhetoric (mostly from single issue, special interest opponents), I think Mr. Kelly has done a fine job as mayor. He has been the most "hands on" Mayor of Halifax that I can recall. Ironically, most of the criticisms I hear about him all stem from his passion to not lose sight of the “minor” issues (pet control, graffiti, garbage, abandoned shopping carts, concerts, etc.), all things to improve the quality of life in this fair city. Yes there are bigger issues, but there must be no problem with Mr. Kelly’s handling of them because that’s not where most of the criticisms lie. Mr. Kelly has proven himself to be an effective and attentive mayor and someone this city needs. The creation and maintenance of a website designed to smear a man’s name under the guise of a “discussion forum” is as distasteful as it is insulting. I wonder how long this message stays up…

Kelly is better known as Mayor Doofus, since he has been totally ineffective as mayor. His concern is cat bylaws and posters while the world passes the city by. Our downtown is dying thanks to the anti-development groups he allows to stonewall every development proposal, our streets are crime-ridden and our road infrastructure is a bad joke. He must go.

I'm beginning to think that some of you people need to take a lesson from the school kids. Bulling is not aloud. What example are you showing our kids. Why aren't you out there helping to keep people safe instead of sitting in front of your computers. Put on your pint shirts, shake hands and work for the good of our city and stop trying to make it look like "Tronto" Peter is a hard worker as well as a few councillors. If all of you were working as hard as they do you wouldn't be wasting your time talking bad about anyone. Grow up children grow up.

Joan Oakes, you ask why DumpKelly members aren't out helping to keep people safe....do I have to remind you that it was DumpKelly.com who initiated contact with the Guardian Angels and negotiated for Curtis Sliwah 's visit to Halifax at the end of this month? I believe that would be a huge contribution to keeping people safe.
Peter Kelly is indeed a hard worker. The problem is that he gets nowhere anymore. With one hard-working councilor (not a few) we no longer have an effective group pf elected officials working for us in Halifax and the former counties. Peter Kelly is a good man. He's no longer a good leader.
Now, as far as the rest of your accusations I just don't get it. You accuse this site's members of being useless wastrels who have nothing better to do than to sit around in our underwear in front of our computer screens all day bashing and bullying Peter Kelly....when in fact the voters of the Halifax Regional Municipality will be participating in a municipal election in 2008 and one of those who will asking for our votes is Mayor Peter Kelly. The last time I looked, not only do you Ms. Oakes have the absolute right to voice your opinion as you have demonstrated so well right here, but so do I and every other member of this website.
This website was set up as a precursor to the 2008 municipal elections and the info you and others have perused on this site are FACTS on the front page and OPINION on the message board from people who believe it's time for change.
But this missive is no doubt a waste of my finger power as I doubt you will be back but if you do have the courtesy of checking back to see if anyone responded to your post here, a word of advice: Rick Howe is not all knowing...just because he rants and raves about how nasty and unfair this website is doesn't mean that it's true. The next time you turn on his show or read his column in the Daily News keep that in mind, ok?
Now, can the rest of us who really care about this city get back to the business at hand?
Time for a Mayor of Champions!

This site has had a huge impact on getting things done in Halifax.
For example, since DumpKelly.com first announced the Guardian Angels had accepted out invitation to vist Halifax and consider setting up a chapter, municipal politicians, including Mayor Kelly have started to address crime on the streets.
Maybe it's just lip service, but nothing had been done up until this site started to demand ACTION.
DumpKelly.com is holding Kelly responsible for his actions or, as some would describe, inactions.
It's no longer good enough to talk, it's time for action.
The mayor has been called out on facts. Try to keep that in mind.
Halifax needs a leader.

I guess I got a reaction No, I don't listen to Rick Howe nor read his columns. It was a few of us having coffee and the subject came up. I guess we'll all see for ourselves on election day.

The best thing that could happen to HRM right now is that Peter Kelly would be gone. He and his staff have no vision, neither present nor future for HRM. We need someone in there that is going to get the important things done that need to be done, and not behind closed doors under a cone of silence. I wonder if Peter Kelly and Stephen Harper were born under the same sign.

In all seriousness, he has not accomplished much in 8 years. Granted, it is tough to get much done with a council that is so weak and fragmented, but Kelly easily could have been seen as a leader among this crowd. I think the best that anyone could say about him (and they would be giving him too much credit)is that he has been a mildly competent care-taker. But, it cannot be said that he has been a strong mayor with a clear sense of where he wants to take the city. We deserve better.

It's one thing to oppose Peter Kelly and the council, it's another to choose alternative leadership and direction that is truly superior.
Having the Guardian Angels set up a chapter here is hardly something I would boast about.
Do you know what type of attitudes they sport? Save the fact that they are simply glorified vigilantes that may introduce more violence and tension and problems, than they solve. It is a hack solution that at best is going to create a turf war between the red barets and everyone that is perceived to be a problem.
How about effectively addressing the root problems and boosting support for the police? Support for a department we already have in place to address violent crime.
Yes, Halifax needs a leader, but bringing in the Guardian Angels is not leadership. It's an act of desperation and a step further in the wrong direction.

Peter Kelly is a very good politician.... and that's as far as it goes.
Honestly, the man's political aspirations are no secret (at least they shouldn't be) and perhaps they've already been discussed in this forum (I'm new). This is a man who became the PC candidate for the old Bedford provincial riding in the early 90's prior to amalgamation (which he lost to the Liberal candidate) and then became the feistiest post-amalgamation councillor you could imagine, with an eye on his future. Like the Joker says in the new Dark Knight movie, "It's all part of the plan."
Why has Kelly accomplished so little as mayor? It's because when you're the person in charge and you're constantly thinking about the bigger picture, that being your political future, you want to piss off as few people as possible. Look at all the waffling he's done. He's trying to be calculating, but it hasn't worked as anticipated.
There are two possible scenarios that I believe Kelly is working towards choosing between: A federal seat, or going for the provincial PC leadership with an eye to becoming premier. These things will either happen sooner or later but it'll be when Mr. Kelly believes he stands a reasonable shot at achieving either goal. It's not a question of "if", it's a question of "when".
It's funny to think that he railed against Walter Fitzgerald, who was the consummate politician back in the day. Kelly is cut from the same cloth as Fitzgerald; he just isn't as charismatic as old Roly-Poly was.
You can't achieve great things for our city if you're afraid to take risks and are more focused on sizing up the potential political fallout from every situation. Clearly Peter Kelly has other things on his mind than trying to build up HRM. It's way past time for him to be shown the door.
