Re:Time to clean out Halifax City Hall 2007/08/24 20:15
and what do you propose to replace the council with? Any Council coming in has to deal with needed infrastructure like replacing water lines that are being repaired on a crisis management level costing 3,5 million a year. It is estimated that it would take from 400 million to 600 million a year. The ironic thing is Charlottetown and Moncton Whom Halifax so badly wants to compete with for trivial concert hostings both have good functional works departments and those places also have good recreational facilities with little debt on the books. funny Moncton can host national baseball and softball championships , Summerside and even Knetville but Halifax's senior mens baseball team is on probation for the shape the new field at the North Commons is in. completed in 2002 and completed half done. And You actually think you could meet the demands of European sports Bodies to host a commonwealth games?
Until Halifax can actually have an entrepenuers classs that thinks beyond their own retirement Halifax will always beholding to trying to pan handle money from other levels of government for the latest Hobby business. Couple of years ago it was Soundstages how many of those exist as taxpaying enterprises in Halifax of the three that ate 2 million dollars from the province? ONE out of THREE and that is questionable to the use.

I think many of the current council members will be gone next year. Let's hope. This council is all about the individule councillor and Kelly has allowed this split in council to exist without taking the lead and exposing the split in public.
I only know of one councillor that came out and pointed to this. That would be Sue Uteck.
What say you Kelly?

Most of Komedy Kouncil needs to go. Let's go thru the list:
Dist 1 - Steve Streatch - Not bad, keep him.
Dist 2 - Krista Snow - Could have been so much better. Jury is out.
Dist 3 - David Hendsbee - Good guy, keep him.
Dist 4 - Harry McInroy - Time to say goodbye. One of the bylaw for all occasions bunch.
Dist 5 - Gloria McCluskey - A classic. Keep her.
Dist 6 - Andrew Younger - Has potential if he is allowed to grow in an environment without bozos around him.
Dist 7 - Bill Karsten - Village idiot. Must go.
Dist 8 - Becky Kent - Almost as bad as Karsten. See ya!
Dist 9 - Jim Smith - Tied for the worst of the bunch. An embarassment to the city. Go far, far away.
Dist 10 - Mary Wile - Someone, anyone, run against this woman.
Dist 11 - Patrick Murphy - Favorite part of his house is the mirror. Loves to hear himself talk. Scary if he gets reelected.
Dist 12 - Dawn Sloane - Smith's running mate for chief idiot. Crude, coarse, loud, uneducated, stupid. Another huge embarassment.
Dist 13 - Sue Uteck - Not so bad. Needs to stop hanging out at the shoe shop though.
Dist 14 - Sheila Fougere - Not convinced about her. If she runs for mayor, she won't be coming back as councillor. Trouble is, prior to her that district elected Howard Epstein. Please god, no!
Dist 15 - Russell Walker - Has actually gotten better over the years.
Dist 16 - Debbie Hum - Disappointing.
Dist 17 - Linda Mosher - Likes to whine too much. Has been affected by PK's style and has turned into a bylaw lover instead of the no-nonsense type she used to be.
Dist 18 - Stephen Adams - Taxi commissar (a huge negative) but otherwise sensible.
Dist 19 - Brad Johns - If Karsten is the village idiot, this guy is the court jester. Moron. Goodbye.
Dist 20 - Bob Harvey - Left-winger but sometimes is actually the voice of reason on council, which tells you how bad thos council actually is.
Dist 21 - Gary Martin - No comment.
Dist 22 - Reg Rankin - Coun. Moonbeam. Time to pump some gas Reg, and leave council.
Dist 23 - Gary Meade - Will someone down there who can walk and chew gum at the same time and talk in coherent sentences please run against this guy?

Re 'Komedy Kouncil needs to go'
Here's my two cents worth based on years of close contact with most of the "players"
Dist 1: Steve Streatch. Good guy at heart, slightly to the right of the Great Kahn, actually seems to make sense now and again.
Dist 2: Krista Snow. Same as her father, heart in right place but doesn't have his sharp mind and buckets of common sense.
Dist 3: David Hendsbee. What do you say about a guy who's campaign pitch is "re-elect me so that I can get my pension"...(no kidding, he actually said that). Not such a good guy, he redefines duplicitous.
Dist 4: Harry McInroy. Yup...got to go. Harry contributes nothing useful.
Dist 5: Gloria McCluskey. Always liked her. You can't fault her for the single minded way she beats the drum for downtown Dartmouth..afterall, one those people in her district get to vote for her. However, do ya think she could see things just a little more globally so to speak.
Dist 6: Andrew Younger. Has potential for sure but the problem with him isn't the bozo's..Younger's ego is the real enemy. There is no one more impressed with him than himself and that always gets in the way of good decision making.
Dist 7: Bill Karsten. Yup...agree with you on this one...
Dist 8: Becky Kent. Just as bad. The whole council would have been better off if Bruce Heatherington was still there. He knew how to swing a deal.
Dist 9: Jim Smith. Absolutely the worst of the bunch. Calling him an embarassment to the city doesn't even begin to describe him.
Dist 10: Mary Wile. How did this happen...good Lord
Dist 11: Pat Murphy. Call me crazy, but I like Murph. One thing about him is he does understand his district and he takes care of the people...and every once in a while he comes up with a good idea or two. When you look at some of the clowns on council, Patrick starts to look good by comparison.
Dist 12: Dawn Sloan. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm the trouble with Dawn is that she's a lot smarter than she lets on. Have dealt with her many times and she's impressive once you get past what passes in the the North End for "that down home touch". The fact of the matter is she is usually right on any given issue and often seems to have access to a pretty accurate cystral ball. I'll give you the loud and coarse, but don't let the rough around the edges thing fool you.
Dist 13: Sue Uteck. Frankly, I like her. She straight forward, solid, shoots from the hip, defends her district and still manages to keep a reasonable perspective on the whole municipality. The other thing I like about Sue is that she is rock solid honest. The other thing I like about her is that she doesn't have to like you to work with you. She's all about the task at hand. I'll take a council full of Sue Utecks before I would have a council full of Andrew Youngers.
Dist 14: Sheila Fougere. Again, having known Sheila for many years now I have great respect for her. Her biggest downfall is that she doesn't seem to be able show the rest of us just how capable she is. If you ask the people in her district, they will swear by her. Just look at her pluralities. You can't underestimate someone who did as well against Alexa as did Sheila. I watched her debate our current Fed NDP leader (when he was still on Tor council) over various municiple issue. She's good!!
Dist 15: Russell Walker. Here is another guy I like but he just doesn't bring much to the table.
Dist 16: Debbie Hum. VERY disappointing
Dist 17: Linda Mosher. I'll give you this one. Although I would rather have the Linda that was first elected. She was great...Took no prisoners and didn't knuckle under to staff. Hey, even George MacLellan admired her.
Dist 18: Steve Adams. This is a bright mind and a hard worker. Steve has one of those brilliant minds that is blessed with copious amounts of common sense as well. He's a guy you don't take on lightly. A street fighter when he needs to be, a tactician when necessary and always effective.
Dist 19: Brad Johns. Another guy with his heart in the right place but he has that techy geeky nervous laugh thing going on. However, his constituants will tell you they like him. He doesn't hurt council....and, he was right to be concerned over the issue re development in behind Rocky Lake Drive. There's more to that story if anyone wants to ask the right questions.
Dist 20: Bob Harvey. Agreed
Dist 21: Gary Martin. Agreed
Dist 22: Reg Rankin. AGREED ten fold
Dist 23: Surely the people of Dist 23 think more of themselves than this. I wonder what his wife is doing for a parking spot now????

Krista Snow who is that. Unless you live in Waverly, Fall River and have money, or a specical interest group she doesn't know where the borders of her district are. The saying for most is "No Snow for District 2".

After watching them on TV for a few years, I feel Gloria is the only opne worth keeping.
Glad to see Fougere go (libe in this district). Just like having a HRM staff member representing you. My read, she takes one position with HRM behind closed doors, and another in public (in front of media). But, is smiley, and innocent looking,, so can easily trick the offguard.. I believe she would have a real surprise if she ran again on many streets. I agree with another posting, the race for Mayor will take her out (for good hopefully)
