HRM should be known as the City of Halifax, a couple of councillors said Tuesday at City Hall. During a debate on a proposed municipal charter, Lower Sackville Coun. Bob Harvey made the proposition. He said that since Spryfield and Rockingham were annexed by the former City of Halifax, people still know where they are.
“The communities will be just as strong, have just as much identity and will be just as proud having 200 communities within our municipality — except that we will accept the brand name that we’re known by everywhere in the world except here,” Harvey said.
Downtown Halifax Coun. Dawn Sloane said that the Chamber of Commerce supports the name change. “If we don’t act as one being known as Halifax, then we are acting separately and we are not helping our business community,” Sloane said. “It would show that we are united and willing to go forward,” Sloane said.
Dartmouth Centre Coun. Gloria McCluskey, and former mayor of Dartmouth, was quick in her opposition “I disagree with that 100 per cent,” McCluskey said.

The article did not say what Mayor Kelly thought about the idea. No doubt he'll form a committee to study the various impacts.

I don't know what the fuss is about. Call it Halifax on paper and the people call call it, bedford, spryfield, dartmouth, etc. It's the identity that counts and people are smart enough to figure it out.

The thing is that the HRM is way more than Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedfod and Sackville. Somehow the rest of us get forgotten and ignored except at tax time when they have their hands out for that annual property tax increase.

ah we all feel forgotten everything can't be done at once i had pot holes on my street two and i think it suck two but as time went on they fixed it i still don't see how a mayor can be held responsible for those thing? tax increases well i hope some day taxes are lower but if people keep buying outside the inner city and we need new road, water more streets plowed, more people to in a office sitting on a phone listening to you complain how you are forgotten

Yes, I agree. HRM should be called Halifax (and its various component parts will always be referred to as they always have). I think I see it as a safety issue -- rename streets so they don't confuse emergency workers etc.

The city is in serious need of a face-lift and a fresh start. But the name need not be 'brand new'. If name-changing is indeed in the works, then at least be unique. Suggestion - the original mikmaq name 'Chebucto'. (translates as 'deep harbour') Chebucto has a certain ring and is distinctive as opposed to the present colorless, copy-cat name. Yes, it is time for a fresh start . So let's get back to the future - out with the old and in with the older.
